Comparative Social Policy -

Transitional Justice in East and Southeast Asia

Since the early 1970s, over forty countries have entered the process of liberalisation and democratisation. This wave has affected countries in Europe, Africa, America and Asia. Democratisation has not only brought about elected governments but has also triggered numerous debates on how to deal with human rights abuses committed by former authoritarian regimes. Different social and societal approaches have been taken to meet the growing request for transitional justice. This course looks at the various concepts and policy orientations adopted in a variety of newly established democracies with special focus on East and Southeast Asian states.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research in Business and Social Studies

The quality of conducted research primarily depends on the appropriateness of the applied research methodology. Many students approach a course on social research with anxiety, because they tend to associate the course with mathematics and statistics, both being subjects they usually do not really like. This course tries to help students in a nonthreatening manner to understand what researchers do and why.

Political Development in Postwar East Asia

At the end of the last century, a further wave of democratisation spread throughout the world and toppled numerous authoritarian leaders. In East Asia, the wave brought about fundamental political changes in Taiwan, South Korea and Mongolia. What has become of these new democracies? Is there a reverse wave in sight? How stable are these new democracies? In this course, I would like to address these questions and provide an insightful interpretation of the events that made headlines around the world.
